Everyone is vulnerable. A godly person may contract a terminal illness, see a spouse killed in a bizarre accident, or watch a child die as the result of a birth defect. Why does God allow such things to happen? Doesn't God care? It's tempting to give well-worn answers like these: "Everything happens for a reason," "God's ways are higher than our ways," "These things only seem bad from our perspective, but God knows it's all good." Such platitudes do more harm than good. The truth is, not everything that we experience is caused or condoned by God. We live in a world where even the most faithful, godly people suffer heartache and tragedy, so we need to learn how to deal with that.
"If we are to be mature, we must accept the senselessness of much that we experience in life," Dr. Hickson writes. "We must proceed from this understanding to take responsibility for all that is within our control. We must also emulate the compassion of God and reach out with care for those who suffer the tragedies of life."
SENSELESS confronts us with the fact that we live in a world where everyone is vulnerable, even those who serve God. Yet God cares for us in the midst of our suffering.
