The history of God’s church stretches back to the time of the New Testament. Since the time of the New Testament, God’s church has been in existence on the earth. Many movements have developed with the hope of correcting some of the church’s shortcomings throughout the many centuries since the New Testament. Not everyone, however, agrees what these shortcomings are in the church. What one person believes is a shortcoming another person does not agree with. Thus, the history of the church over the last two millennia includes many movements, some that have made a good contribution to the church and others that have made poor additions to this development of the church.

We believe that the Church of God Reformation Movement has made and is making a good contribution to God’s church. This Movement began in the early 1880’s with a dual concern. First, the Movement was concerned with holiness of life and second, it was concerned with the unity of God’s holy people. The Church of God Reformation Movement was convinced that the Bible calls all Christians to holiness as well as unity.

Indeed, there were already some movements in the 1880’s that were calling Christians to unity. The concern of the Church of God Movement was that both of these important biblical messages be married and not separate issues of the church and faith. The Movement held that holiness that does not lead to unity is not pure holiness, and also that unity that does not consist of holy people is not true biblical unity.
