This volume offers ample evidence of extensive research, detailed organization, and deep insight into the issues involved as well as insight into the scriptures. Professor Carver’s treatment moves historically from the writings of the Ante-Nicene Fathers, to around 450 (Augustine), and on to the teachings of Calvin himself. The final section deals with Calvinism, including what the author calls “modified Calvinism,” as it developed after the time of Calvin.
In terms of this work’s lasting significance and contribution, it would be difficult to overstate its value in the area of historical reference and perspectives, development of Christian doctrine (particularly soteriology), the work and contributions of the various historic church councils and other deliberative bodies, the teachings of many of the early Christian writers, and denominational and individual perspectives in more recent times on the issues in question. This work would be a valuable and highly useful addition to the libraries of pastors, as well as teachers in biblical studies, theology, historical theology, church or Christian history, and doctrine.
