It is a delight to remember the gifts of friendship—to remember the people whose lives have touched mine. For some it was a brief encounter. We passed as ships in the night. Even so, they have changed me. Other people have been life-long contributors to me.
Once again, it was Emerson who said, “Every man is my superior in that I learn from him.” This book, then, is written for two purposes: First, it extols friendship—a treasure that makes a poor man wealthy, or by its absence, makes a wealthy man a pauper. Then it extols people who have become my friends because they helped me.
